There are things we carry long after the moment itself has passed, regret, disappointment, embarrassment, words we wish we had spoken differently, and questions that may never have answers. We hold onto them as though carrying them along enough might somehow change what happened. But some things were never meant to remain with us forever.
Learning To Release
A river does not hold onto everything that enters its waters. Branches, leaves, and pieces of the past are carried downstream as the current continues forward. Perhaps healing asks something similar of us. Not to erase what happened or pretend it did not matter, but to recognize when an experience has taught us what it came to teach us and allow ourselves to release the weight of it.
You Are More Than What Happened
A painful experience can become part of your story without becoming the definition of who you are. You may have trusted someone who did not deserve your trust. You may have ignored something your intuition was trying to tell you. You may simply have made the best decision you could with what you understood at the time. None of those moments diminish your worth.
Leave The Shame At The Riverbank
Shame tells us to keep looking backward. Wisdom asks us to look back only long enough to understand, learn, and then turn toward what is ahead. There is a difference between taking responsibility for a choice and punishing yourself for having made it. One helps you grow. The other keeps you standing in the same place. You are allowed to forgive the version of yourself who did not yet know what you now know today.
Let The Current Move Again
Healing does not always arrive as a dramatic moment of release. Sometimes it happens quietly. You think about something and notice it hurts a little less. You remember without blaming yourself. You begin trusting your judgement again. Little by little, the current starts moving. And one day you will realize you are no longer carrying the experience. You are carrying the wisdom it left behind.
A Quiet Question To Carry With You
What are you still carrying that has already taught you everything you needed to learn?
