When “I’m Stuck Abroad” Becomes the Story
Recently, a follower shared a story about someone who claimed to work in the wine industry in Italy. The conversations seemed normal at first. The person appeared knowledgeable, spoke confidently about their work, and painted a believable picture of life overseas.
Then the pattern began to emerge.
There was always a reason they couldn’t meet. There was always a reason normal verification was difficult. Their location overseas became the explanation for every obstacle.
This is what makes the “overseas traveler” story so effective. Distance creates uncertainty.
Most people don’t know what life is really like for a wine exporter in Italy, an engineer on an offshore platform, a military contractor overseas, or a business owner traveling through Europe. Because we can’t easily verify those details, our minds fill in the gaps.
Scammers understand this. The foreign location becomes a shield against questions:

The lesson isn’t to assume everyone overseas is dishonest. Many legitimate people travel for work. The lesson is to pay attention when distance becomes the answer to every question.
A genuine person usually looks for ways to reduce uncertainty. A scammer often relies on uncertainty to keep the story alive.
